Tradition Meets Glamour: Archana Kochhar’s Sarees Shine at Miss World

In a harmonious blend of tradition and contemporary fashion, renowned designer Archana Kochhar has unveiled a reimagined collection of Gollabhama sarees for the 72nd Miss World pageant, currently underway in Telangana. This initiative not only showcases India’s rich textile heritage but also aligns with the pageant’s ‘Beauty with a Purpose’ ethos, celebrating cultural diversity and craftsmanship.

Originating from Siddipet in Telangana, Gollabhama sarees are distinguished by their intricate motifs depicting milkmaids, known as ‘Gollabhama’ in the local language. These motifs are meticulously woven into the fabric, a testament to the skill and dedication of the weavers. The sarees have earned the Geographical Indication (GI) tag and were recognized by UNESCO as an iconic textile craft of India, highlighting their cultural and artistic significance.

Kochhar’s collection transforms these traditional weaves into ensembles fit for the global stage. Styled by Archana Kochhar, the Gollabhama sarees are expertly woven by the weavers of Telangana which are paired with her signature lehengas and blouses crafted from Telangana’s traditional pattu fabric. By integrating contemporary design elements with the classic Gollabhama weaves, she has created ensembles that exude regal elegance while retaining their comforting charm. Each piece remains true to its roots, offering both authenticity and modern appeal.

“The Gollabhama saree stands as a radiant emblem of India’s vibrant weaving heritage,” said Archana Kochhar. “By showcasing these masterpieces on the grand Miss World stage, we celebrate the skill and dedication of the Siddipet artisans, inviting the world to witness and cherish their extraordinary craftsmanship.”

This collection not only pays homage to the weavers’ legacy but also contributes to the revival of a craft that has seen dwindling numbers in recent years. By spotlighting Gollabhama sarees on an international platform—styled with lehengas and blouses made from Telangana’s pattu fabric, also woven by the state’s skilled artisans—Kochhar hopes to inspire renewed interest and support for the artisans behind these masterpieces.
