World Suicide Prevention Day: We must not be judgemental, says Monika Khanna

Actress Monika Khanna, who was seen in Durga Aur Charu, says that World Suicide Prevention Day is a significant time to understand how we can help people in challenging circumstances. She adds that we must not judge their situations, rather help them in overcoming them.

“I never thought that the prevention of suicide would require a dedicated day, considering all the other special days we celebrate. It's a sensitive and delicate topic. In today's society, we tend to be quick to judge others, making it difficult for people to be transparent about their struggles. The fear of judgment and comparison on social media often prevents open communication and creates unrealistic standards of happiness,” she says.

She adds, “We must avoid being judgmental and learn to listen patiently to others. Second, we need to stop comparing our lives to others since everyone's journey is unique. The pressure to constantly succeed and be number one can be overwhelming. Success is not one-size-fits-all, and we need to embrace our differences.”

It's important to value everyone around us, she says, adding, “Society needs to recognise the value of common, ordinary individuals and not just idolise superstars. We should measure ourselves by our own standards and not conform to external pressures. The solution to these issues lies within ourselves. Good friends and self-reflection can provide strength and support. Seek help if needed; there are therapists and helplines available.”

She says, “Remember, you don't have to depend on others for happiness. You can find contentment within yourself. If suicidal thoughts arise, think of loved ones who will always support you. Reach out to therapists or helplines, or confide in strangers who can lend an empathetic ear. Ultimately, you're not alone, and there are resources to help you through difficult times.”
