Bollywood actor Bobby Deol is gearing up for what he describes as the most challenging role of his career — a character in director Anurag Kashyap's forthcoming film Bandar, slated for release in 2026. In an exclusive interaction in Mumbai, Deol spoke with unusual candor about the psychological barriers he had to overcome before accepting the role, and what he believes the film signals about where his career is headed.
"Every actor wants to do something different, but there comes a time when an image gets fixed, and it's not easy to break out of it," Deol said. "I have also gone through that phase of being typecast." The admission is striking from an actor who spent much of the 2000s navigating a commercial image before reinventing himself with a critically lauded turn in Aashram, the 2020 MX Player web series directed by Prakash Jha.
Bandar represents a further — and arguably bolder — step in that reinvention. Produced by Nikhil Dwivedi, the film features a strong ensemble cast led by Sanya Malhotra, known for her nuanced performances in Dangal (2016) and Ludo (2020). Details about the plot are being kept under wraps, but sources close to the production indicate the film blends psychological tension with Kashyap's signature raw visual style.
Deol acknowledged that his first instinct was hesitation. "This role was completely outside my comfort zone," he said. "Initially, I was hesitant — but I didn't hold myself back. I fully immersed myself in the character." He declined to elaborate on the specific nature of the role, but said the preparation required him to "unlearn" certain performance instincts that had become habitual over the years.
Kashyap, whose directorial credits include Gangs of Wasseypur (2012) and Ugly (2013), has a well-documented track record of drawing unexpected performances from actors. His collaboration with Deol, two figures who occupy very different creative registers in Hindi cinema, has already generated significant anticipation among industry observers.
Producer Nikhil Dwivedi, whose recent projects include Scam 1992 and Rocket Boys, brings a strong track record in content-driven storytelling to the project. The combination of Kashyap's direction, Dwivedi's production sensibility, and a cast anchored by Deol and Malhotra positions Bandar as one of the more commercially unconventional Bollywood offerings expected this year.
Speaking about the broader industry context, Deol noted that audiences have grown increasingly sophisticated in their expectations of male leads. "People now want to see real people on screen, not just heroes," he said. "That's a shift I respect, and it's why a film like Bandar feels timely."
The film has yet to receive an official release date, though it is confirmed for a 2026 window. A formal announcement, including theatrical and streaming distribution details, is expected from the production house in the coming weeks.
